Our management

Our Board is chaired by David Tyler. David and his fellow Board members are responsible for setting the long-term strategy for the group. They act in the best interests of our shareholders, colleagues, customers and stakeholders, making sure that we deliver on our promises.

Mike Coupe, our Chief Executive, chairs our Operating Board. They concentrate on the day-to-day management of the group and it’s their role to execute the strategy set out by the Board.

David Tyler
Chairman

Appointed to the Board on 1 October 2009, David became Chairman on 1 November 2009. He is also non-executive Chairman of Hammerson plc and of Domestic and General Group Limited. He was previously Finance Director of GUS plc (1997-2006) and has held senior financial and general management roles with Christie’s International Plc (1989-96), County NatWest Limited (1986-89) and Unilever PLC (1974-86). He was Chairman of Logica plc (2007-12) and of 3i Quoted Private Equity PLC (2007-09), and a Non-Executive Director of Experian plc (2006-12), Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (2007-09) and Burberry Group Plc (2002-2015).

David is Chairman of the Nomination Committee and a member of the CR&S Committee.

Mike Coupe
Group Chief Executive

Appointed Chief Executive Officer on 9 July 2014, Mike has been a member of the Operating Board since October 2004 and an Executive Director since 1 August 2007. He joined Sainsbury’s from Big Food Group where he was a Board Director of Big Food Group plc and Managing Director of Iceland Food Stores. He previously worked for both ASDA and Tesco, where he served in a variety of senior management roles. Mike is also a Non-Executive Director of Greene King plc.

Mike is a member of the CR&S Committee.

Kevin O’Byrne
Chief Financial Officer

Kevin O’Byrne joined Sainsbury’s on 9 January 2017 as CFO of J Sainsbury plc. Kevin is a member of J Sainsbury plc Board and the business’s Operating Board. He joined from Poundland Group where he was CEO. He previously held executive roles at Kingfisher plc from 2008 to 2015, including CEO of B&Q UK & Ireland and Group Finance Director. Prior to that he was Group Finance Director of Dixons Retail plc. Kevin has been a Non-Executive Director of Land Securities Group plc since 2008 where he is Audit Committee Chairman. He was Senior Independent Director from 2012 to 2016.

John Rogers
CEO Sainsbury’s Argos

John became CEO of Sainsbury’s Argos on 5 September 2016 following the acquisition of Home Retail Group by J Sainsbury plc. Prior to his appointment as CEO of Sainsbury’s Argos, John was Chief Financial Officer of J Sainsbury plc for six years and had responsibility for finance, group strategy, Sainsbury’s online, Business Development, property, procurement and operational efficiency. John is also a member of the Sainsbury’s Operating Board, Sainsbury’s Bank plc Board and the Sainsbury’s plc Board. Prior to Sainsbury’s, John was Group Finance Director for Hanover Acceptances, a diversified corporation with wholly-owned subsidiaries in the food manufacturing, real estate and agri-business sectors. John is a Non-Executive Director of Travis Perkins plc.

Susan Rice
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 1 June 2013, Susan became the Senior Independent Director on 6 July 2016. She is also Chairman of Scottish Water, Business Stream, President of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, and a Non-Executive Director of Big Society Capital Limited, the North American Income Trust and the Banking Standards Board. Susan is the first Chairman of Scotland’s new Fiscal Commission and a lay member of Court of Edinburgh University. She also chairs the Parton’s Board of Governors of the National Galleries of Scotland. Susan was formerly Chief Executive Officer and subsequently Chairman of Lloyds TSB Scotland plc (2000 – 2009), and a Non-Executive Director of Bank of England (2007 – 2014), SSE plc (2003 – 2014), the Edinburgh International Book Festival (2001 – 2015), and Scotland’s Futures Forum.

Susan is a member of the Remuneration Committee and member of the Nomination Committee.

Jean Tomlin
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 1 January 2013, Jean is an Independent Board member of Michael Kors Holdings Limited, a Trustee of The Join In Trust and Step Up To Serve, and a Council Member at Loughborough University. Formerly, she was Director of HR, Workforce and Accreditation for The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where she oversaw the creation and execution of the hugely successful Games Maker volunteering programme. She was previously Group HR Director at Marks and Spencer Group Plc, HR Director and founder member of Egg plc and Sales & Operations Director of Prudential Direct.

Jean is Chairman of the CR&S Committee, member of the Nomination Committee and member of the Remuneration Committee.

David Keens
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 29 April 2015, David is also a Non-Executive Director and the Senior Independent Director of Auto Trader Group plc, and chairs its Audit Committee. David was formerly Group Finance Director of NEXT plc (1991-2015) and their Group Treasurer (1986-1991). Previous management experience includes nine years in the UK and overseas operations of multinational food manufacturer Nabisco (1977-1986) and, prior to that, seven years in the accountancy profession.

David is Chairman of the Audit Committee and a member of the Nomination Committee.

Matt Brittin
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 27 January 2011, Matt is Google’s President – Europe, Middle East and Africa. Before joining Google to run its UK operations at the start of 2007, Matt spent much of his career in media and marketing, with particular interests in strategy, commercial development and sales performance. This included commercial and digital leadership roles in UK media. He is also a Director of charitable organisation, The Media Trust.

Matt is a member of the Audit Committee and a member of the Nomination Committee.

Brian Cassin
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 1 April 2016, Brian is Chief Executive Officer of Experian plc. Brian joined Experian as Chief Financial Officer in April 2012, a post he held until his appointment as Chief Executive Officer in July 2014. Prior to this, Brian spent his career in investment banking at Baring Brothers International (1992-98), Greenhill & Co (1998-2012) where he was Managing Director and Partner and the London Stock Exchange (1988 to 92) where he held senior roles.

Brian is a member of the Audit Committee and a member of the Nomination Committee.

Mary Harris
Non-Executive Director

Appointed to the Board on 1 August 2007, Mary is a member of the supervisory board of Unibail-Rodamco S.E. and a Non-Executive Director of ITV plc and Reckitt Benckiser Group plc. She was formerly a member of the Supervisory Boards of TNT Express NV and Unibail-Rodamco S.E. She previously spent much of her career with McKinsey & Company, most recently as a partner, where she worked primarily with retail/consumer clients in China, South East Asia and Europe. Her previous work experience includes working for PepsiCo in Greece and the UK, as a sales and marketing executive.

Mary is Chairman of the Remuneration Committee, a member of the CR&S Committee and a member of the Nomination Committee.

Mike Coupe
Group Chief Executive

Tim Fallowfield
Company Secretary & Corporate Services Director

Tim joined Sainsbury’s in 2001 as Company Secretary and joined the Operating Board in 2004. In addition to his role as Company Secretary, Tim is responsible for the Corporate Services Division comprising Legal Services, Data Governance, Safety, Shareholder Services, Insurance and Central Security. He chairs the Group Safety Committee and the Data Governance Committee. Tim joined Sainsbury’s from Exel plc, the global logistics company, where he was Company Secretary and Head of Legal Services (1994-2001). He began his career at the international law firm Clifford Chance and is a qualified solicitor.

Peter Griffiths, OBE
CEO Sainsbury’s Bank

Peter was appointed CEO of Sainsbury’s Bank in November 2012. He is former Chairman of the CBI Council in Wales and the Building Societies Association. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2010, in recognition of his support for the Financial Services Industry. He has previously worked with Principality, was a management consultant with Morgan Chambers and started his career with 23 years at NatWest, where he left as Head of Commercial Services for NatWest Group IT.

Between March 2002 and his Sainsbury’s Bank appointment, Peter was Group Chief Executive of Principality, Wales’ largest building society. During a decade in charge of the mutual, he grew the business from the 13th largest building society in the UK to the 7th, increasing assets from £2.2 billion to £6.4 billion.

Paul Mills-Hicks
Food Commercial Director

Paul joined the Operating Board in May 2014 as Food Commercial Director having spent over 10 years at Sainsbury’s. He was closely involved in the formation and execution of the 'Making Sainsbury's Great Again' strategy in a variety of roles in the formation of the ‘Making Sainsbury’s Great Again’ strategy. Following this he held a variety of roles in commercial, strategy and finance, most recently as Business Unit Director for Grocery. Prior to Sainsbury’s, Paul was European Controller at Marks and Spencer Group plc and a Director at UBS Warburg. Paul is a qualified electronic engineer and a Chartered Accountant.

Angie Risley
Group HR Director

Angie was appointed Group HR Director and a member of the Operating Board in January 2013 with responsibility for human resources. She is also a Non-Executive Director of Serco Group plc and chairs their Remuneration Committee. She is also a Director of Sainsbury's Bank plc. Angie was most recently Group HR Director at Lloyds Banking Group and prior to this an Executive Director of Whitbread plc with responsibility for HR and Corporate Social Responsibility. She was a member of the Low Pay Commission.

Richard Newsome
Acting Digital and Technology Director

Richard joined the Operating Board in January 2017, with responsibility for the Digital & Technology Division. He joined Sainsbury’s in July 2014 as Director of Operations, from Rolls Royce where Richard was responsible for Global IT Programme Delivery. Prior to that Richard had been UK IT Director for Cadbury and Kraft Foods, Client Director for Xansa’s IT Outsourcing business, and had a long career in IT and Business Change at The Boots Company.

Jon Hartland
Acting Retail and Operations Director

Jon joined Sainsbury’s in 1986 and held the position of Store Director for numerous stores until 1996. He then held a number of senior roles before becoming the Change Director in 2002 and later becoming the Central Retail Director. Jon was appointed Director for Non Food Operations in 2011 and has been acting up as the Retail and Operations Director role since October 2015. He sits on the GS1 apparel Europe board and was previously a Regional manager for Fine Fare (Part of the Associated of British foods).

John Rogers

Iain MacMillan
Chief Financial Officer

Prior to his appointment as CFO of Sainsbury’s Argos, Iain MacMillan was Director of Commercial & Retail Finance at Sainsbury’s for three years. Iain has close to 20 years’ experience in finance, having started his career as a qualified accountant at PWC. His career in retail began at Cadbury’s, where he held a number of positions including Global Chocolate Strategy Director and Finance Director of Green & Black’s, before joining Waitrose as Head of Commercial and Property Finance.

James Brown
Director of Commercial Sainsbury’s

Prior to his appointment as Director of Commercial in Sainsburys Argos, James was Director of Sainsbury's Non-Food Trading since 2014. James Brown has a wealth of experience in clothing and home retail, having held senior merchandising positions at Marks & Spencer, Matalan and Shop Direct before joining Sainsbury’s in 2011. His vision of ‘high street style at supermarket prices’ has been a great success and, under his leadership, Sainsbury’s Tu clothing range has become the sixth largest by volume in the UK.

Robbie Feather
Director of Commercial Argos

Robbie Feather joined Sainsbury’s in 2011, after two years as Buying Director for Electricals at John Lewis. After managing Sainsbury’s general merchandise and entertainment business he was appointed Director of Online at Sainsbury’s. Robbie also has extensive experience in growing and leading SME businesses, including Feather and Black beds.

Dean Clegg
Director of Property

Dean Clegg is Director of Property. He has over 25 years’ retail experience, having held management positions in BHS, Asda, and Woolworths before starting his career with Sainsbury’s as Managing Director for the south region in 2005. After two years as Store Development Director with a remit that included investment programme, construction and store planning, Dean was made Director of Property for Sainsbury's in 2014.

Ella Bennett
Director of HR

Ella Bennett is an experienced business leader with a solid focus on people and transformation. After her formative years with Mind, the National Association for Mental Health, Ella moved to the IT sector where she held senior HR roles at ICL and Fujitsu Services before joining Argos. Ella is a Fellow of the CIPD.

Steve Carson
Director of Retail & Contact Centres

In his role at Argos, Steve has led the store teams, both customer contact centres, central retail operations, eBay, store format, FastTrack delivery and the retail non-food team. Originally from Northern Ireland, he previously spent 17 years with Sainsbury’s, with various store, store support centre and field roles and was a Zone Managing Director before joining Home Retail Group 10 years ago. In this time, he worked in Homebase and Argos before taking on his group role a couple of years ago.

Graham Barnes
Director of Supply Chain & Logistics

Graham Barnes joined Argos in 1995 as a Buying Assistant and enjoyed sixteen years in commercial roles, across a wide portfolio of categories culminating as Trading Director for Home and Kids. Graham and his team ensure Sainsbury’s Argos manages the products customers want at the right time and right location. This involves coordinating suppliers, sales plans, distribution, home delivery and much more so customers can rely on us to get the product they want, when they want it. He played a key role in the implementation of the Argoshub and spoke network.

Bertrand Bodson
Chief Digital and Marketing Officer

Previously Chief Digital Officer for Home Retail Group, Bertrand Bodson leads the digital strategy across Sainsbury’s Argos and has responsibility for the overall commercial and financial performance of the digital business. He also runs the marketing, customer experience and publications teams. Prior to joining Home Retail Group, Bertrand led the digital transformation of EMI, where he was Executive Vice President and has also worked for Amazon in the US and at BCG. He has also co-founded Bragster.com, one of the largest VC-backed social media platforms which was sold to Guinness World Records.

George Goley
Chief Technology Officer

George Goley has been Chief Technology Officer for Home Retail Group since June 2015. George joined Home Retail Group from Sears Online, where he was Chief Information Officer responsible for all of Sears’ websites, mobile applications, marketplace seller software and many in-store systems. Prior to that George was Vice President of Technology at Amazon.com, responsible for Amazon’s catalogue systems, data warehouse systems, runtime web-facing systems and portions of the search systems. He has also held a variety of Director and Senior Director roles at Microsoft, including stints with SQL Server, MSN.com, Microsoft.com and The Office of the CTO.

Clare Askem
Managing Director Habitat

Clare Askem has been Managing Director of Habitat since September 2011 and is responsible for continuing the iconic brand’s commitment to bringing affordable, directional designs from around the globe to the high street. She previously held the position of Director of Strategic Development for Home Retail Group and Buying and Operations Director for Dixons Group.

David Arden
CFO Sainsbury’s Bank and Interim MD of Argos Financial Services

David Arden is the Chief Financial Officer for Sainsbury’s Bank as well as interim Managing Director for Argos Financial Services which encompasses Home Retail Group Insurances Ltd, Home Retail Group Card Services Ltd and Argos Personal Loans Ltd.

He joined Sainsbury’s Bank from Shop Direct Financial Services where he was Chief Financial Officer. In his 23 year career he has held a number of senior positions with RBS and Tesco Bank, including Managing Director and Head of Finance for Tesco Bank Credit Cards, (where he was responsible for six million credit card customers across the UK) and Risk and Finance Director for Tesco Bank.

Roger Davis
Chair of the Sainsbury’s Bank Board

Roger is currently Chairman of Gem Diamonds, Sainsbury’s Bank and Global RadioData Communications (GRC) and Future for Heroes. He is also a Non-Executive Director of Experian and BUPA.

Roger began his career in the British Army, leaving in 1986 to join Robert Fleming Holdings moving to be Managing Director of India for Jardine Fleming in 1995. In 1997 Roger then moved to Hong Kong to take up the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BZW, Asia Pacific. He was then appointed Chairman and Chief Executive of Barclays Capital, Asia Pacific, before returning to the UK as Chief Executive of Business Banking for Barclays. He left Barclays as Head of the UK Bank and as an Executive Director of Barclays in 2005. Roger was also previously Chairman of Cabot Credit Management.

Graeme Forrester
Chief Risk Officer

Graeme joined Sainsbury’s Bank as Chief Risk Officer from Standard Chartered where he was the Group Head of Operational Risk based in Singapore. This was a global role covering NE Asia, SE Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas. He was previously Chief Operating Officer for Wholesale Banking Risk, where he was responsible for credit policies, processes and systems. Graeme also spent two years in Consumer Banking in charge of Credit, Risk & Marketing Analytics and the implementation of new decisioning systems.

Graeme has over 30 years’ experience in Wholesale and Retail Banking and, prior to joining Standard Chartered, he worked with Barclays, KPMG, Citibank and RBS.

David Jones
Chief Customer Officer

David joined Sainsbury’s Bank from Moneysupermarket.com where he was the Managing Director. Prior to that he worked at Virgin Money in a variety of senior roles, including Commercial Director and Bank Development Director. Previously he was Commercial Director at RBS and spent seven years at Procter & Gamble working across a variety of European brand management positions.

Marcia Campbell
Independent Non-Executive Director

Marcia is a Director of CNP Assurances, France’s leading Life Assurance Company, where she is also a member of the Risk and Audit Committee. She is a Director of Murray International Trust plc, where she is Chairman of the Audit Committee and she is also a member of Aviva’s (UK and ROI) Independent Governance Committee. She is also a Director of Canada Life Limited, Canada Life Group (UK) Limited and Chair of Woodford Investment Committee.

Previously, Marcia spent almost 20 years working in a range of roles in Standard Life PLC ultimately as a member of the Group Executive Committee, serving as a Group Operations Director and CEO Asia Pacific. She was also Operations Director at Ignis Asset Management.

In the public and voluntary sectors, Marcia was Chairman of the Scottish Green Advisory Board and served as a Director of the Accounts Commission for Scotland, Queen Margaret University and Scottish Business in the Community. She was also a Director of the Financial Services Skills Council.

Marcia is Chair of the Transition Committee.

Andrew Simmonds
Independent Non-Executive Director

Andrew is an experienced risk management and treasury professional and has spent 36 years in banking roles in a number of global banking centres worldwide, particularly Asia. Andrew is Director of EFG Private Bank Limited and ICBC Standard Bank Plc.

Until December 2014, Andrew was the Group Head of International Balance Sheet Management for Standard Chartered PLC and a Director of Standard Chartered International Holdings Limited. Prior to this Andrew was Chief Risk Officer for Standard Chartered globally for their Wholesale Bank and before that was Risk Director for all Barclays Bank’s UK business.

In these roles, Andrew was responsible for enterprise-wide risk management, liquidity and capital optimisation and has led a number of strategic programmes relating to banking regulation worldwide.

Andrew is Chair of the Board Risk Committee.

Michael Ross
Independent Non-Executive Director

Michael joined Sainsbury’s Bank in June 2015 to help advance the Bank’s digital and data strategies. He spent the last 20 years in the ecommerce world and is currently Chief Scientist at OrderDynamics which delivers technology and decision analytics solutions for multichannel retailers. These include Neiman Marcus, T.M. Lewin, Brooks Brothers, Jaeger and many others.

Prior to this, Michael founded and became CEO of Figleaves.com, a leading online retailer. During his time there he built the company up to 200 people with sales of £25 million and offices in London and New York. He joined McKinsey in 1994 and spent five years consulting in the early days of the internet.

Michael is also a Non-Executive-Advisory for Abcam plc, an AIM-listed business that manufactures and distributes antibodies. He is also Director of In Kind Director (Charity) and In Kind Direct (International).

Gwyn Burr
Non-Executive Director

Gwyn joined the Operating Board in 2004 as the Customer Director responsible for Marketing, Own Brand, Communications and Customer Service. In 2010 she took on the role of Customer Service and Colleague Director with responsibility for Human Resources, Customer Service, Sponsorship, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Communications. Gwyn became a Non- Executive Director of Sainsbury’s Bank plc in 2007. She joined the boards of the Financial Ombudsman Service as a Non-Executive Director in 2011, was appointed a Non-Executive Director of Wembley Stadium in April 2010 and also became a Non-Executive Director of Hammerson plc in May 2010. Gwyn subsequently left J Sainsbury in March 2013.

Gwyn has nearly 30 years business experience, including five with Nestle Rowntree and over 13 with ASDA/ Walmart where she held various board level positions. Between 2003 and 2006, Gwyn was a Non-Executive Director for the Principality Building Society. In 2014, Gwyn also became a Non-Executive Director on the boards of Just Eat Plc, Metro AG and DFS Trading.

Angie Risley
Group HR Director

Angie was appointed Group HR Director and a member of the Operating Board in January 2013 with responsibility for human resources. She is also a Non-Executive Director of Serco Group plc and chairs their Remuneration Committee. She is also a Director of Sainsbury's Bank plc. Angie was most recently Group HR Director at Lloyds Banking Group and prior to this an Executive Director of Whitbread plc with responsibility for HR and Corporate Social Responsibility. She was a member of the Low Pay Commission.
