True Distinctiveness in our Kinermony Range

True Distinctiveness in our Kinermony Range

10 April 2019

This month we are launching our Kinermony range in a selected number of stores. A cut of Kinermony Aberdeen Angus is truly unique, sourced from a renowned breed with historic ties to the Sainsbury’s family.

The Sainsbury’s family previously owned a herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle, located in Aberlour, Scotland, which were registered under the herd name (prefix) Kinermony. The herd was renowned for producing quality Aberdeen Angus beef, and Kinermony animals were regularly transported to Smithfield market and sold to discerning customers though Sainsbury’s stores. This was pioneering in allowing us to supply customers with high quality and fully traceable beef products, but in 1983 the Sainsbury’s family sold the Kinermony herd.

In 2012 Sainsbury’s partnered with the Aberdeen Angus Society to restore Sainsbury’s original herd of native Aberdeen Angus cattle known as the Kinermony herd. Now, 7 years later we are launching these products into a selection of our stores on a trial basis, providing our customers with the same quality produce with our restored stock that the original Kinermony herd represented.

The Kinermony products are produced from an integrated supply chain which means customers can be confident that farmers are paid a fair price, and every cut is transparent and traceable. Starting with the best Aberdeen Angus animals in 2012, the stock has been managed by farmers working closely with Sainsbury’s Dairy Development Group, receiving the care and attention they command, ensuring high welfare.

Although originally kept at Aberlour, on the Moray Firth, the herd is now kept at the Queen Mothers farm, the Castle of Mey in Caithness, managed by brothers Danny and Sandy McCarthy.
