At Sainsbury’s we are committed to reducing our food by 50% by 2030. As part of this commitment, we are trialling and launching initiatives across the whole value chain. Working alongside farmers and suppliers, our colleagues in store & support customers to reduce food waste in their homes. Our approach to addressing food waste across the value chain:
We are proud to support food waste action week. This year’s theme is ‘Win. Don’t Bin’ and is focused on supporting customers to use up their leftovers and reduce food waste in their home. According to WRAP, 4.5 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away by UK households every year. Shockingly, one-quarter of that wasted food is due to cooking, preparing, or serving too much, costing UK households £3.5 billion annually.
We are focused on supporting our customers to reduce food waste in their homes. This year, we launched Sainsfreeze which was a pop-up store to highlight the importance of freezing down food to avoid food waste. We provided customers with hints and tips for more effective freezing and storage of food alongside some myth-busting on what can and cannot be frozen. More info can be found here:

We understand how hard it can be to know what to do with your leftovers which is why we have created leftover recipes on our website. We hope this provides customers with inspiration on what to rustle up with their leftovers
Best-ever leftover recipes
We have removed best-before dates from over 1,500 lines including pineapples, pumpkins and apples. This change could help UK households to save 11,000 tonnes each year, the equivalent of 17 million products.
Best before, still great after
We encourage customers to donate any best-before food they may have extra off. Local food banks will accept items like pasta, rice, tinned foods, cereals and biscuits.
